WE Ride — Issue #6: Brendan Mayall

WE Ride — Issue #6: Brendan Mayall

For WE Ride (Whites Employees Ride) Issue #6 we meet the tallest drink of water in the Whites Powersports team, Brendan Mayall, and hear about his Harley.

WE Ride is all about sharing our passion for two wheels by introducing a team member, what they ride, wear and use in the shed.

Meet Brendan, see if he can do a burnout, and get pumped to get in your gear and go riding!

What’s your name, what do you ride, and what do you do at Whites?

Brendan Mayall, 1993 Harley Davidson Softail Custom (FXSTC), and I’m a Graphic Designer in the Marketing Team so I take care of any and all things marketing and design, particularly for our NZ market.

How long have you had your bike and what mods have you made to it so far?

I’ve had my Harley for two years and it has the following mods (a few of which were done by the previous owner):

  1. 12” T-bars Handlebars (internally wired for cleaner look).
  2. Vans Cult Grips.
  3. LED Indicators Front and Rear (Rear is a 3-in-1 unit).
  4. Progressive Suspension Front and Rear w/RAP.
  5. Performance Machine Front Brake Caliper.
  6. Stainless Braided Brake Lines.
  7. Screamin’ Eagle Air Filter.
  8. Vance and Hines Exhaust.
  9. Custom Seat.
  10. Custom Rear Fender.
  11. Custom Side Number Plate Mount (The seat, fender and plate mount were all modified/made by me).
  12. Shinko SR777 Tyres Front and Rear.
  13. Newer style Harley Mirrors.
  14. New Footpegs.
  15. Premier Brake Pads (sintered).
  16. MTX Rear Brake Disc.
  17. K&N Oil Filter.
  18. Putoline fluids Oil, Primary & Transmission, Brake Fluid.
  19. Motion Pro Throttle Cables.
  20. NGK Spark Plugs.

Do you have more plans for your Harley?

If the new licence plate law comes in, I’ll have to change rear fender so I can mount the plate on it. I also plan to fit an Andrews EV27 Camshaft, Mikuni 42mm carburettor, and a Motion Pro clutch cable update.

What sort of riding do you enjoy and where do you like to do it?

Exploring/Cruising rides, these days. Especially now I am on a 30+ year old Harley. Not as ‘high-spirited’ as before.

Always the classic Waingaro Road to Raglan and back to Hamilton. Also, the ride out to Kawhia and back. The Coro(mandel) loop is amazing too.

Are there any notable products that you use on the regular to enhance your riding?

I use the Whites Motorcycle Parts Scissor Lift Jack — it works great on the Harley as it has the higher weight limit (498kg/1100lbs). It keeps it level to do any and all work on it... it’s a solid unit.

While my bike is on the lift I use a Whites Motorcycle Parts Tie Down as a safety strap.

Tell us a bit about your life on two wheels...

I’ve always been into bikes since I was little, and I got my licence as soon as I could at 15/16 years old.

I got my learners and rode around on a Suzuki FXR150. When I got my full (licence) I purchased a 2004 Honda CBR600RR and had that for a couple years.

I had a break from bikes as my interest went to cars. Then I started working at Whites and got into bikes again... I bought a Yamaha XJR1300 and did some custom work to it to make it look a bit more ‘cafe racer’ style.

I had a big crash on that which put me off riding for about ten months, then I bought a 2018 Yamaha XSR900. I had that for a year or so then got a 2008 Honda CBR1000RR before the opportunity to buy my uncle’s Harley came up. He had owned it for 29 years (he bought it brand new), and the change has started a huge, new and surprising interest in the Harley world.

Tell us about your gear — why you chose it and what you like about it.

Shoei NXR Helmet — it’s light, comfortable and offers amazing protection (need to upgrade to the NXR2 soon, though).

Richa Toulon 2 Leather Jacket — the leather is the best quality and soft yet durable.

Oxford Super Hoodie for shorter rides or if it’s really hot. It offers great protection and is comfortable.

Oxford AA Jeans — awesome protection while still looking like a normal pair of jeans.

Gaerne Voyager Boots — super comfortable riding shoe with great protection and I can still wear them to work and ride home easily without changing.

Dririder Speed 2 (not pictured) or Argon Clash Gloves; depending on what I feel like wearing, what the weather’s doing and where I’m riding.
